Clay is an 11-year-old boy in the hospital. He has to take a lot of medicines for his heart problem, but would get nervous and had trouble swallowing without choking. Jessie, a child life therapist in Norton Children’s Hospital, taught Clay how to relax and practice swallowing using different candies that were about the size of the pills Clay has to take. With practice using the candy, Clay has been able to learn new ways to swallow pills and to take his medicines with no problems. And he obviously loves sweet tea!
